Personal Training vs. Small Group Training: Which Is Right for You?

Short answer: One-on-one personal training gives you a coach's full attention and costs the most per session. Semi-private training gives you an individualized program and hands-on coaching while sharing the hour with a few others, at a lower cost. Small group training puts a coach in charge of a group following a shared structure, and it's the most affordable. For most healthy adults, semi-private or small group coaching delivers the results of personal training at a better value.

One-on-one personal training

  • Best for: specific needs, very new exercisers who want privacy, or people returning to activity after being cleared by a physical therapist.

  • Pros: full attention, fully custom sessions, flexible scheduling.

  • Cons: highest cost per session, and less of the energy and community that keeps many people consistent.

Semi-private training

  • Best for: people who want personal-training-level programming and coaching at a more sustainable price.

  • How it works: a coach works with a few clients at once, each following their own individualized program. Your coach still teaches technique, adjusts your loads and tracks your progress.

  • At PT Plus: our Flex Plus program includes 8–12 semi-private sessions per month and coach access through our custom app, for $400–$450/month.

Small group training

  • Best for: people who love training with others, want structure and community, and want the lowest monthly cost.

  • How it works: a coach leads a small group through a planned session, scaling each movement to each person's level.

  • At PT Plus: Small Group Coaching is $160/month.

How to decide

  • Budget first: choose the most coaching you can sustain for at least 6 months. Consistency beats intensity.

  • Personality: if a group energizes you, go small group. If you want more individual attention, go semi-private.

  • Specific needs: injuries, sport goals or complicated schedules usually point to semi-private.

  • Location matters: the best program is the one close enough that you'll actually go.
